Nehemiah 8:3, 5-6, 8-10 (The Message, Amplified Bible)

 

 

He read it facing the town square at the Water Gate from early dawn until noon in the hearing of the men and women, all who could understand it. And all the people listened—they were all ears—to the Book of The Law.

 

Ezra opened the book in sight of all the people. Every eye was on him for he was standing on the raised platform they had built, and as he opened the book all the people stood up. Then Ezra praised andand all the people responded, "AMEN!  AMEN!" lifting up their hands; andand worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. blessed the Lord, the great God, then they bowed their heads, they fell to their knees

So they read from the Book of the Law of God distinctly, faithfully amplifying and giving the sense so that the people understood the reading.
